What's New: Reducing Underage Access to Alcohol

HEAPP has developed two programs to address social and retail access to alcohol by minors and visibly intoxicated individuals.

CARD ME: This program will provide liquor licensees with a "tool kit" to increase the business' ability to prevent illegal sales to minors and/or visibly intoxicated patrons. The tool kit will include a manual for managers, posters and tip sheets for employees, and a card to provide to patrons to explain why they are being carded (state law requires it for those who appear to be under 27 years of age). A community involvement component includes "Thank You for Carding" recognition cards individuals may present to licensees they observe being responsible vendors.

PARTY: Promoting Alcohol Responsibility Through You: This program which incorporates evidence-based strategies aims to provide campuses with a tool to reduce students' willingness to furnish alcohol to minors and/or intoxicated students, as well as to improve students’ use of risk-reduction strategies when, and if, they host a party which involves alcohol.

The key components of this program include:

  • "What is a standard drink?" and "Why does alcohol affect people differently?"
  • What you need to know before you provide alcohol to minors or intoxicated individuals
  • Lower-risk drinking tips for those who choose to consume
  • Party hosting tips to protect yourself and your guests
  • Intervening to prevent excessive consumption or related safety issues
  • Recognizing and responding to alcohol poisoning

HEAPP is offering a training to learn how to implement the PARTY program on March 23rd. If you would like to participate, please contact LeeAnne Dodge at 780-5158 to discuss.
