About Us: Mission & History

Mission

As a statewide initiative, Maine’s Higher Education Alcohol Prevention Partnership (HEAPP) seeks to reduce high-risk alcohol use and its impact upon individuals, campuses, and communities. We strive to establish an environment that supports healthy norms, and to create a unified effort within Maine’s higher education community in order to share resources, implement evidence–based strategies and advocate with one voice.

History

HEAPP began in 2001 as a series of trainings to increase on prevention and intervention strategies open to all Maine colleges and universities and had about 6 campuses involved.

Today, HEAPP is a more comprehensive statewide initiative that not only supports and builds capacity for prevention efforts on campuses, but also works to change the state level environment through collaboration, proactive strategies, and public policy and media advocacy efforts.

The development of HEAPP has been made possible with the support of the Maine Office of Substance Abuse and funding from a discretionary prevention grants from the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).
