From 2001-2003, four schools—Central Maine Community College, Eastern Maine
Community College, Maine Maritime Academy, and Unity College—worked with the Maine Office of Substance Abuse as partners in an Enforcing the Underage Drinking Laws Discretionary Grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to reduce underage drinking. As part of this effort, each campus was responsible for creating a campus and community coalition, and implementing environmental management strategies for alcohol and other drug (AOD) prevention.
The Core Alcohol and Other Drug Survey was used to collect data on AOD related student behavior and perceptions of student AOD use. Here are some of thel statistically significant changes in student perceptions and behavior related to alcohol use.
Compared to responses in 2001, freshmen and sophomore students in 2003 were:
• 47% less likely to serve or provide someone under the age of 21 with alcohol.
• 55% more likely to support disciplinary sanctions for students who repeatedly violated the campus alcohol
policies.
• 26% more likely to have not had a drink in the 30 days prior to the survey.
• 46% less likely to use alcohol at on-campus events.
• 25% less likely to have reported experiencing nausea or vomiting as a result of their AOD use.
• 29% less likely to have missed a class as a result of their AOD use.
• 23% less likely to have done something they later regretted.
