Maine's Higher Education Alcohol Prevention Partnership offers Maine campuses an opportunity to assess and improve their substance abuse prevention practices

High-risk drinking in the collegiate environment is a pressing public health issue nationally and here in Maine; it is also a legal concern for institutions of higher education. For professionals who are involved daily with the risks and impact of high-risk drinking, effectively addressing student alcohol use is a great challenge. Maine ’s Higher Education Alcohol Prevention Partnership recognizes that an institution of higher education’s capacity and efficacy in implementing effective substance abuse prevention is influenced by infrastructure elements (such as staffing variations and institutional support) as well as readiness and available resources.

To create a snapshot of institutional capacity and needs for substance abuse prevention as well as statewide readiness, HEAPP has developed an assessment tool for campuses to utilize. The 20 institutions which completed this prevention plan will receive technical assistance and funding to implement the plan during the upcoming academic years. HEAPP estimates that the average award will be in the range of $5,000-$7,500 per institution.*

*The amount awarded to campuses will vary based on institution size, the design of the proposed plan, and the number of Maine institutions that participate in this process. Funding for this project is contingent upon continued availability of federal funds awarded to the Maine Office of Substance Abuse.
